[Movie] Commando (1985)

A retired special agent named John Matrix led an elite unit and has left the armed forces to live in a secluded mountain home with his daughter Jenny. But now he is forced out of retirement when his daughter is kidnapped by a band of thugs intent on revenge! Unbeknownst to Matrix, the members of his former unit are being killed one by one. Even though Matrix' friend General Franklin Kirby gives Matrix armed guards, attackers manage to kidnap Matrix and Jenny. Matrix learns that Bennett, a former member of his Matrix' unit who was presumed dead has kidnapped him to try to force Matrix to do a political assassination for a man called Arius (who calls himself El Presidente), a warlord formerly bested by Matrix who wishes to lead a military coup in his home country. Since Arius will have Jenny killed if Matrix refuses, Matrix reluctantly accepts the demand.

Siddharth , Omi and Jai are close friends and room mates who are studying at Delhi University. Siddharth has completed M.A in Economics and is preparing for PhD. Wong Kar-Wai's movie about two love-struck cops is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion and color. The first half deals with Cop 223, who has broken up with his girlfriend of five years. He purchases a tin of pineapples with an expiration date of May 1 each day for a month. By the end of that time, he feels that he will either be rejoined with his love or that it too will have expired forever. The second half shows Cop 663 dealing with his breakup with his flight attendant girlfriend. He talks to his apartment furnishings until he meets a new girl at a local lunch counter.

In “Cyborg Girl,” Keisuke Koide plays Jiro, a lonely 20 year old student celebrating his birthday all by himself. He goes to a department store to buy himself a gift when he sees the girl. The girl appears in tattered clothes, tries on a new dress, then walks out without paying for the dress. Afterwards, the guy has a meal at a restaurant when the girl appears again. She tells him, “Today’s my birthday too.” They spend the rest of the day together, making Jiro’s 20th birthday his best ever. After that day the girl completely vanishes.

Based on a popular online novel, the slick period action movie Cold Steel follows the exploits of a Chinese sniper unit during the Sino-Japanese War. Peter Ho (Sophie’s Revenge) and Tony Leung Ka Fai star as the headstrong rookie and veteran marksman, respectively, in this wartime action drama about romance, camaraderie and the way of the bullet. Directed by David Wu (The Bride with White Hair 2), the film is packed with action sequences and shootouts and features supporting performances from Song Jia (Once Upon a Time in Tibet), veteran martial artist Yu Rong Guang, television actor Wilson Guo (Palace) and Angeles Woo (Reign of Assassins), daughter of director John Woo. Young hunter Mu Liangfeng (Peter Ho) is arrested after getting into a fight with some soldiers over war widow Liu Yan (Song Jia). While he is being transported to the army camp, the convoy falls under attack by Japanese snipers, and Mu ends up saving the day with his sharpshooting skills. He is then promptly conscripted into the army’s newly formed sniper unit, led by platoon leader Zhang Menzi (Tony Leung Ka Fai). The sniper unit is tasked to slow down the Japanese army’s advancement, but many lives are at stake when their mission goes wrong.

Kae Horii (Erika Sawajiri) moves into her new flat in an undisclosed area of Kyoto. While unpacking her belongings, she discovers a hidden compartment behind a inconspicuous mirror. In that compartment, Kae finds a notebook, that turns out to be a diary belonging to the previous tenant. Later that evening Kae starts to read the diary.

The writer of the diary is Ibuki Mano (Yuko Takeuchi), a young lady about to embark on her first year as an elementary school teacher. Ibuki is also in love with a man named Takashi, who may or may not hold similar feelings for Ibuki.

The diary immediately resonates with Kae, as she plans to become an elementary school teacher herself. Ibuki’s experiences also works as an inspirational instructional guide for Kae’s own personal life. Kae is also in love with an aloof illustrator/artist (Yusuke Iseya), who may or may not hold similar feelings for Kae.

Astronomer Dr. Ellie Arroway has long been interested in contact to faraway lands, a love fostered in her childhood by her father, Ted Arroway, who passed away when she was nine years old leaving her then orphaned. Her current work in monitoring for extraterrestrial life is based on that love and is in part an homage to her father. Ever since funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) was pulled on her work, which is referred to some, including her NSF superior David Drumlin, as more science fiction than science, Ellie, with a few of her rogue scientist colleagues, have looked for funding from where ever they could get it to continue their work. When Ellie and her colleagues hear chatter originating from the vicinity of the star Vega, Ellie feels vindicated. But that vindication is short lived when others, including politicians, the military, religious leaders and other scientists such as Drumlin, try to take over her work. When the messages received from space are decoded, the project takes on a whole new dimension, which strengthens for Ellie the quest for the truth. Thrown into the mix are the unknown person who has up until now funded most of Ellie's work and what his motivations are, and Palmer Joss, a renowned author and theologian, who despite their fundamental differences in outlook, is mutually attracted to Ellie, that attraction based in part on intellect and their common goal of wanting to know the truth.
