In Chicago, the family man and executive of an advertisement agency Neil Randall has a perfect life: he expects to be promoted in his job soon, he has a beautiful and sexy wife, Abby, a lovely daughter, Sophie, and he lives in a wonderful house. When Neil's boss Karl Granger invites him to spend the weekend in his cottage in the country, Abby hires a nanny for Sophie to spend the day with her sister Diane. While driving Abby in his truck to meet Diane, a stranger hidden on the backseat appears with a gun, and informs them that he has kidnapped Sophie. He introduces himself as Ryan and demands that for twenty-four hours, the couple shall obey his orders, otherwise he will kill Sophie. While keeping the couple under his total control, he makes it clear that he is a calculating sociopath with nothing to lose, with the intention of destroying Neil's perfect life.

Kae Horii (Erika Sawajiri) moves into her new flat in an undisclosed area of Kyoto. While unpacking her belongings, she discovers a hidden compartment behind a inconspicuous mirror. In that compartment, Kae finds a notebook, that turns out to be a diary belonging to the previous tenant. Later that evening Kae starts to read the diary.

Having broken up with his previous girlfriend, law student Eun-sik is keen to consummate a new relationship with Kyeong-ah, a popular swimming champion. Despite help from his friends, Eun-sik begins to doubt himself when Gi-joo, a suave prosecutor, tries to compete for Kyeong-ah's affections. Kyeong-ah has a dark past in which she was raped when she was in high school, this results in her not able to engage as much sexual contact towards Eun-sik, this then makes him very frustrated. In 1948, during the Chinese Civil War, the Captain Gu Zidi from the Liberation Army falls in disgrace with his superiors after an incident with prisoners of war. He is assigned with his forty-seven soldiers from the Nineth Company to defend a coal mine until they hear the retreat assembly of the bugle. Gu Zidi never hears the call, his men die and he gathers their bodies inside the mine. Gu Zidi awakes in a hospital and neither his identity and nor his officer ranking are recognized; the forty-seven soldiers that heroically died are only considered missing and their action is completely unknown by the high-command. Gu Zidi fights in the Korea War and spends the rest of his life feeling guilty for the death of his men and trying to prove and achieve recognition for the honorable deed of his forty-seven soldiers.

Om Prakash Makhija is a Junior Artiste in Bollywood, who is infatuated with actress Shantipriya, and hopes to marry her someday. His memories start to return when he meets with his widowed mother, Bela, from his previous birth. He also meets with Mukesh and together they decide to make a movie 'Om Shanti Om'. Om then hires a look-alike of Shantipriya, and hopes to force a confession out of Mukesh - but things go awry and Om finds his life endangered once again.
